PREP NOTEBOOK: Tigers, Indians advance to semis

The Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens softball squads advanced to Thursday's semifinals in the Northwestern 3A/4A tournament.

Foard (19-3) topped Hickory, 14-2, behind a grand slam from Michaela Wilson. Ashley Oliver also had an RBI triple and an RBI single in the contest.

Lexi Shubert pitched 4.2 innings, allowing no hits and stuck out eight Lady Red Tornado batters.

Addie Bolick picked up the save in her one-third inning pitched, striking out one, allowing no hits and two runs.

Despite trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning and waiting out a 20-minute rain delay in the top of the fifth, St. Stephens rallied to score seven runs in the next two innings, including four in the fifth and three in the sixth, on its way to a 9-7 comeback win against Hibriten.

Katie Baker, Vonna Wood, Taylor Lail and Briana Thornburg led the Lady Indians (17-6) with one RBI each.

Northwestern 3A/4A baseball tournament

No. 4 St. Stephens 12, No. 5 Hibriten 3

The Indians advanced to face top-seed South Caldwell in Friday's semifinals at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls.

St. Stephens (11-10) was paced by 12 hits in the contest, including two each from Phillip Carroll, Dillion Spencer and Dylan Beiland.

Beiland and Logan Gray led the Indians with three RBIs each, while Zach Bumgarner drove in two RBIs.

Colton Allison picked up the victory on the mound, striking out four Panthers in his six innings on the mound. Beiland earned the three-inning save.

No. 2 Watauga 8, No. 7 Fred T. Foard 7 (eight innings)

The Pioneers (15-7) rallied to win in extra innings Tuesday in the first round of the Northwestern 3A/4A baseball tournament.

It took extra innings, but in the eighth, Matt Proffitt drove in the game-winning run on a hit to complete the comeback after trailing 7-3 earlier in the contest.

Watauga plays No. 3 Hickory (17-6), who advanced with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Alexander Central, Friday at 4:30 p.m. at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls.

St. Stephens 5, Alexander Central 0

Kalyn Meosky scored two goals, while Caitlin Mahoney, Olivia Holmes and Hannah Hunt each added on in the Lady Indians conference victory over the Lady Cougars on Tuesday.

Five different players for St. Stephens had assists, including Susan Bare, Lauren Brooks, Macy Franklin, Ayling Alvarez and Mahoney.

Taylor Logan earned the shutout in goal for Saint (16-1-2, 10-0-1).

Maiden advances, N-C match postponed

The Maiden tennis team (16-3) picked up a 9-0 shutout victory against Brevard on Tuesday in the first round of the 2A tennis playoffs.

The Blue Devils travel to either North Surry (7-8) or Salisbury (13-3) next Tuesday in the second round.

Newton-Conover's first-round match-up with Wilkes Central was postponed due to weather. Both squads have agreed to play at Alexander Central tomorrow at 4 p.m.
