PREP NOTEBOOK: Red Devils top Trojans on mat

Newton-Conover defeated Bandys in a match-up of top-ranked wrestling teams in the conference, 40-17.

The Red Devils improve to 36-2 on the season and 5-0 in the Catawba Valley 2A, while Bandys falls to 12-11 overall and 3-1 in the CVAC.

The Lady Tigers fell behind 22-7 early before dropping a pivotal Northwestern 3A/4A game against the Lady Cougars on Tuesday.

Madi Sudderth scored 21 points to lead Alexander Central (15-4, 7-1), while Kelsie Rhyne and Sara Ferguson added 12 points apiece.

Brooke Robinson guided Foard with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Chelsea Turner added 15 points in the Foard loss.

Boys prep basketball

The Cougars (14-5, 7-1) remain near the top of the NWC standings with a victory against the Tigers (11-8, 1-7).

Tyler Crouch netted a team-high 14 points for Alexander Central, while Nathan Birkedal added nine points. Alex Alyer also had a near double-double with eight points and nine boards.

Jordan Turner scored a game-high 18 points for Foard, including six three-point baskets. Brice Falgout added 10 points for the Tigers.
