PREP NOTEBOOK: Red Devils golf third after day one

The Newton-Conover golf team stands in third place after the first day of the 2A state golf tournament at Long Leaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

The Red Devils, the 2012 CVAC champions, carded a team score of 310, seven strokes behind North Lincoln for second place and 20 strokes behind tournament-leading Salisbury.

Individually, four county golfers are inside the top 10, including Alex Hefner, who is tied for third place after shooting a 71. He is one stroke off the lead.

Maiden’s Thomas Lilly shot a 73 and is tied for fifth place.

Bunker Hill’s Tyler Lail is one stroke back of Lilly in a tie for eighth.

Newton-Conover’s Lee Mitchell is five strokes off the lead after carding a 75.
