PREP NOTEBOOK: N-C wins third CVAC golf match

April 2, 2012

Newton-Conover won its third-straight CVAC golf match of the season, edging Maiden out by four strokes at Quaker Meadows golf course in Morganton.

Bunker Hill finished in sixth with a combined team score of 180, while Bandys came in seventh with a score of 211. Host East Burke finished in fifth with a score of 168.

Bunker Hill's Tyler Lail, Newton-Conover's Alex Hefner and Draughn's Caleb Lawson tied for medalist with a 36.

The Red Devils hold a 14-stroke lead over Maiden after three matches played.

Katie Baker tossed her first no-hitter of the season as the Lady Indians bounced back from a conference loss Friday against Alexander Central to pick up a non-conference win against the Lady Bears.

Baker struck out eight Bunker Hill batters, while walking two in her no-hit performance.

Vonna Wood drove in two runs for St. Stephens (9-5, 4-2), while Briana Clontz, Jodi Kerley, Alana Starnes, Briana Thornburg and Darian Fisher drove in one run each.
