PREP NOTEBOOK: N-C wins 18-hole match

Newton-Conover won for the fourth time in as many golf matches, capturing the first 18-hole match of the season at Glen Oaks Country Club in Maiden on Monday.

The Red Devils shot 331 as a team, six strokes better than host Maiden.

South Iredell finished third with a 344, while Bunker Hill was fourth with a 354. Bandys tied for last with West Caldwell with a 451.

Lee Mitchell led the Red Devils, earning medalist with his score of 75. South Iredell's Daniel Bellingham came in second, one stroke behind.

Bunker Hill's Tyler Lail came in third with a 77, while Maiden's Thomas Lilly took fourth place with a 79.

Red Tornadoes win again

Hickory won the fourth Northwestern conference golf match held Monday at Brushy Mountain Golf Course in Taylorsville.

The Red Tornadoes carded a team score of 313, three strokes better than host Alexander Central.

The Cougars Alex Rhyne shot a 72, earning medalist. Teammate Tanner Pearson tied for second place with Hickory's Peter Harrill. Both players shot 73.

Fred T. Foard tied for fourth place with Watauga. Both teams carded scores of 322.

St. Stephens came in sixth place with a 325 team score.

After four matches, Hickory leads the standings by 17 strokes over Hibriten, 920-937.

St. Stephens 3, Bandys 1

A bases loaded double with two outs in the top of the seventh by Darian Fisher lifted the Lady Indians to their 12th victory of the season.

Fisher drove in all three RBIs on the hit for St. Stephens (12-5, 6-2).

The loss ends a seven-game winning streak by the Lady Trojans (7-4).

Bunker Hill 4, South Iredell 3

The Lady Bears improved to 7-2 in conference play with a one-run victory against the Lady Vikings in Statesville on Monday.

Kara Travis paced Bunker Hill with a two-RBI single that helped give her team the victory.

Kadi O'Shell pitched her way out of a bases loaded situation in the sixth inning with one out, helping her team stop any potential comeback by South Iredell (4-5).

Prep soccer

St. Stephens 7, Hibriten 1

Macy Franklin pocketed three goals to help keep the Lady Indians undefeated in conference play.

Caroline Holmes, Kalyn Meosky, Susan Bare and Caitlin Mahoney also scored runs for St. Stephens (13-1-1, 7-0-0).

Lauren Brooks and Meosky assisted on two goals each.

South Caldwell 1, Fred T. Foard 0

Kat Connor's lone goal helped South Caldwell to a Northwestern conference victory on Monday at Foard.

The Lady Tigers (9-5-3, 1-4-2) had 13 shots on goal, but could not get a goal past Lady Spartans goalkeeper Hannah Young.

South Caldwell improves to 2-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the NWC 3A/4A.
