PREP NOTEBOOK: N-C ousted from dual playoffs
Newton-Conover's attempt to three-peat as 2A dual team state champions ended Tuesday with a 6-0 loss to Shelby, the top-ranked tennis team in the state.
The Red Devils, who finish the season with a 16-5 record, battled a number of injuries to players, which didn't make trying to knock off the Golden Lions an easy task.
"We were going to about have to be on fire to win this one, but that did not happen," said Red Devils coach Brian Tate. "I don't think I have ever had a tennis team so crippled by injuries — tennis and non-tennis. I don't know if we could have pulled the upset, but I wish we were healthy enough to at least give it a good shot."
