PREP NOTEBOOK: N-C opens CVAC play with win
The Newton-Conover soccer team opened up play in the Catawba Valley 2A with a 4-0 shutout against Bunker Hill on Tuesday.
Franklin Wepner paced the Red Devils (3-2-1, 1-0-0) with two goals, while Chandler Johnson and Turner Glynn added one each.
Eli Cordes made two assists for Newton-Conover — the No. 11 ranked 2A boys soccer team in the state. Wepner and Jake LaFrancis also made an assist each.
The Red Devils out shot the Bears (2-3-1, 0-1-0) by a 25-1 margin.
Newton-Conover goalkeeper Jake Miller made one save, while Bunker Hill's Omar Chavez made eight saves.
Bandys 6, Maiden 0
Freshman Zach Beresford tallied four goals in helping the Trojans win their conference opener against the visiting Blue Devils.
Fellow Trojan freshman Heptzel Santos added a goal, while junior Armando Rivera netted a goal, as well.
Kenny Ryan, Morrisey Muniz and Connor Borst made assists for Bandys (2-4, 1-0).
Maiden drops to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the CVAC.
Prep volleyball
St. Stephens 3, Hibriten 0
Behind eight kills from Breanna Hall and six from Marisa Jones, the Lady Indians picked up a home conference win against the Lady Panthers 25-5, 25-11 and 25-5.
Jenna Boliek added five kills and five aces for Saint (11-1, 4-1), while Katleyn Houser made 14 assists. Bailey Cloninger assisted nine times. Ashley Markland also made six service aces.
Maiden 3, Bandys 0
The Lady Blue Devils picked up a three-set conference victory over the Lady Trojans, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-17, to force a tie in the CVAC standings.
Mckenzie Garrison led Maiden (8-3, 4-1) with 20 kills and two blocks. Rachel Houston added four kills and four blocks, Hannah Martin made 15 assists and Kalie Johnson made 13 assists.
Bandys falls to 5-5 overall and 4-1 in Catawba Valley 2A play.
Bunker Hill 3, Newton-Conover 2
The Lady Red Devils were shocked at home by the visiting Lady Bears in five sets 17-25, 25-15, 24-26, 25-17 and 15-10.
Bunker Hill improves to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in the CVAC, while Newton-Conover falls to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Fred T. Foard 3, South Caldwell 2
The Lady Tigers earned a hard-fought Northwestern 3A/4A win against the visiting Lady Spartans on Tuesday 25-16, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23 and 15-13.
Madison Hayes and Morgan Smith both had 12 kills for Foard (7-2, 3-1), Rebecca Scott made 38 assists and Kaitlin Sigmon tallied 32 digs.
