PREP NOTEBOOK: N-C golf team wins again

For the second time in three days, the Newton-Conover golf team won a non-conference match.

The Red Devils notched a 148 to win by 12 strokes over Maiden in a nine-hole match held at Catawba Country Club.

Newton-Conover’s Alex Hefner earned medalist, carding a 33 in his nine holes.

Teammate Lee Mitchell wasn’t far behind on the scoreboard with a 35, while Chris Ziogas (39) and Perry Davis (41) also had solid rounds.

Bunker Hill’s Tyler Lail and Maiden’s Thomas Lilly finished tied for third with a 36.

Austin Shuford was the leading golfer for Bandys with a 52.
Alan Hilton notched a 43 for Lake Norman.

The prep tennis match scheduled Thursday between Newton-Conover and Bandys was postponed. The match will be made up on April 2.

Prep softball

St. Stephens 13, South Iredell 1 (five innings)

Vonna Wood drove in five RBIs on two triples to lead the Lady Indians (5-3) to the non-conference victory against South Iredell on Thursday.

Katie Baker struck out five batters, allowing one hit and one run on the mound for St. Stephens. She also scored four runs, drove in one RBI and went 3-for-3 from the plate.

Prep soccer

St. Stephens 6, Statesville 0

Macy Franklin scored three goals, while teammate Olivia Holmes added two goals to lead the Lady Indians to the shutout victory at home Thursday.

Franklin and Holmes also assisted on one goal each, while Kalyn Meosky assisted on a goal, as well.

Alex Roarke also scored a goal for St. Stephens (5-1-1), while Taylor Logan and Carolina Holmes combined for the shoutout in goal.
