PREP NOTEBOOK: Maiden, Bandys win CVAC titles

Behind 17 hits, the Maiden Blue Devils won the 2012 Catawba Valley 2A baseball tournament final against Draughn at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night, 12-3.

Seniors Dustin Hipps and Jason Gantt led the charge with four-hit performances at the plate.

The Blue Devils scored in all but one of their innings, including one run in the first, second and fourth, four runs in the third, three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.

No. 1 Bandys 2, No. 2 Draughn 1

Senior pitcher Taylor Sigmon tossed a three-hitter, allowing the Lady Trojans to collect their fourth CVAC tournament title in the past six seasons.

Bandys scored a run each in the second and third innings to take the title, including an RBI-single by Kathleen Reardon in the second.

Anna Hughey plated the lone run for Draughn on a single in the top of the fifth inning.

2A Western Regional golf

Red Devils win title, Lail and Lilly headed to states

Newton-Conover won the 2A Western Regional golf tournament Monday at Fox Den Golf Club in Troutman.

The Red Devils shot a team score of 303, one stroke better than North Lincoln.

Maiden and Shelby tied for third with a score of 306, but the Golden Lions owned the tiebreaker to advance to the 2A state golf tournament at Longleaf Country Club in Southern Pines next Saturday.

Maiden’s Thomas Lilly took medalist honors with a 68. Bunker Hill’s Tyler Lail was three strokes back in second place. Both move on to the state tournament.
