PREP NOTEBOOK: LRDs pick up another CVAC win

Behind 18 points each from Dasia Tipps and Kadesha Gibbs, the Newton-Conover girls basketball team improved to 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A with a 78-28 thrashing of West Caldwell on Tuesday.

Taylor Petty added 16 points for N-C in the victory, while Shynese Whitener scored 11 points.

Draughn 58, Maiden 52

Despite being outscored by four points in the final quarter, the Lady Wildcats edged the Lady Blue Devils in Valdese on Tuesday.

Lauren Duckworth scored a game-high 22 points for Draughn (10-7, 3-4), while Haley Broadwell added 12 points.

Sabrien Gaither led Maiden (7-9, 1-6) with 17 points.

Hickory 75, Fred T. Foard 52

Leading 39-23 at the half, the Lady Red Tornadoes continued the pace in the second half on their way to their 17th victory of the season.

Yazmen Hannah scored 24 points for Hickory (17-1, 6-0), while Danasia Witherspoon added 29 points.

Kayla Whitworth led Foard (9-8, 2-4) with 14 points, while Chelsea Turner scored 13 points. Brooke Robinson and Chelsea Hoyle also pitched in nine points each.

Boys basketball

West Caldwell 57, Newton-Conover 34

The Warriors improved to 7-0 in the CVAC with a convincing win against the Red Devils (9-8, 4-3).

Chris Michaux scored a game-high 24 points to pace West Caldwell (9-4, 7-0).

Shane Laws led Newton-Conover with eight points. Kevin Cline added six points for the Red Devils.

Draughn 72, Maiden 68 OT

The Wildcats (10-7, 5-2) scored 11 points in overtime, lifting them to the overtime victory at home against the Blue Devils.

Adam Manns scored 19 points for Draughn, while Prescott Pinnix and Thomas Russell added 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Will Jenkins and Matt Johnson combined for half of the points for Maiden (6-9, 2-5) in the game. Jenkins scored 20 points and Johnson netted 19 points.

Hickory 84, Fred T. Foard 66

Despite leading by two points at halftime, Hickory pulled away in the second half, outscoring Foard 46-30, as the Red Tornadoes earned maintained their undefeated mark in conference play.

Zach Jarrett scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace Hickory (16-2, 6-0). Jarrett was one of five Hickory players to reach double-digits, including C.J. Wardrick (10), Jalen Byrd (12), Jordan Walls-Davis (10) and Matt Mason (10).

Jordan Turner scored a game-high 20 points for Foard (11-6, 1-5).
