PREP NOTEBOOK: Lady Tigers advance, Indians fall

The St. Stephens baseball team lost its third-straight 3A first-round playoff game, falling to Crest on Thursday, 13-8.

Tied 7-7 in the fifth inning, Crest score four runs, including a two-RBI single by Brock Melton, to pull away for good. Melton led the Chargers with four RBIs on a 4-for-4 hitting performance on the day.

Four Indians had two hits apiece, including Dillion Spencer, Ky'rawn Whitfield, Dylan Beiland and Phillip Carroll.

St. Stephens ends its season with an 11-12 record overall.

3A softball playoffs

Fred T. Foard 3, Tuscola 0

Behind an 18-strikeout performance from pitcher Lexi Shubert, the Lady Tigers advanced to the second round of the 3A softball playoffs with a shutout victory against the Lady Mountaineers.

Ashley Oliver led Foard offensively with a pair of singles and drove in one RBI. Shubert, who allowed one hit on the mound in the game, also had an RBI single.

The Lady Tigers (20-4) face either Crest (15-4) or North Buncombe (8-15) on Tuesday in the second round of the playoffs with the game location and time yet to be determined.
