PREP NOTEBOOK: Lady Indians fall in NWC opener

St. Stephens lost its opener in the Northwestern 3A/4A conference in four sets to Watauga on Thursday 25-17, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-20.

Breanna Hall and Jenna Boliek led Saint (6-1, 0-1) with seven kills each. Baily Cloninger tallied 13 assists, while Katelyn Houser added 11 assists and eight digs.

Defensively, Ashley Markland recorded 15 digs.

Maiden 3, Bunker Hill 0

Behind 14 assists from Hannah Martin and 12 kills from Mckenzie Garrison, the Lady Blue Devils knocked off the Lady Bears in three sets 26-24, 25-10 and 25-15.

Morgan Huffman added eight kills for the Lady Blue Devils (6-2, 2-0), while Kha Xiong tallied nine kills.

Defensively, Rachel Houston recorded five blocks for Maiden.

The Lady Bears fall to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Fred T. Foard 3, Hickory 1

The Lady Tigers opened their conference schedule with a home victory over the Lady Red Tornadoes in four sets Thursday 25-20, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-16.

Madison Hayes led Foard (6-1, 1-0) with nine kills, while Rebecca Scott added eight kills and 14 assists.

Michaela Stallings added five service aces. Defensively, Kaitlin Sigmon recorded 14 digs.

Bandys 3, East Burke 0

The Lady Trojans improved to 2-0 in the Catawba Valley 2A with a three-set victory over the Lady Cavaliers on Thursday in Catawba 25-21, 25-15 and 25-19.

Kayla Champion led Bandys (3-4, 2-0) with seven kills, two blocks, six digs, three assists and three aces. Sierra Brotherton added nine kills, six blocks and three assists.

South Iredell 3, Newton-Conover 1

The Lady Vikings topped the Lady Red Devils in four sets on Thursday in Statesville 25-27, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20.

Newton-Conover falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Catawba Valley 2A.

Hibriten 3, Newton-Conover 2

Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Panthers used a man advantage to edge the Red Devils in Lenoir on Thursday.

Hibriten's Jacob Vasquez punched in the game winner in the 21st minute of the second half off of a pass from Paul Hogan.

Chandler Johnson and Turner Glynn both netted goals for the Red Devils (2-2-1) on assists from Eli Cordes.

Jake Miller tallied three saves in goal for Newton-Conover, while Mateo Alverez made one save.

Fred T. Foard 4, Hunter Huss 3

Down 0-2 at halftime, the Tigers rallied with four goals in the second half to remain undefeated.

Daniel Tomberlin and Will Saenger netted goals for Foard, but the Huskies took the lead on a Cody Sell score.

A pair of goals by Kenan Ruffner ended up being the difference makers, though, helping Foard improve to 7-0-0.

Lake Norman Charter 2, Bandys 0

The Trojans fall to 2-4 on the season with a home loss to the Knights on Thursday.

Lincolnton 9, Maiden 0

The Blue Devils fall to 0-3 overall with a shutout loss at home against the Wolves.
