PREP NOTEBOOK: Jones, Trojans top Blue Devils

Bandys won a battle of softball heavyweights in the Catawba Valley 2A on Thursday.

Breanna Jones drove in three RBIs on a 3-for-3 day at the plate, leading the Lady Trojans (4-2, 2-1) to the key 4-2 conference win against Maiden (8-2, 3-1).

Tied 2-2 in the sixth inning, the Trojans struck with two runs to take the lead for good.

After Bandys’ Scarlett Harris reached base on a single and Rachel Cox was hit by a pitch, Jones drove in both runners on her second double of the game.

The Trojans took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning behind runs from Harris and Taylor Sigmon.

Maiden answered back.

The Blue Devils’ Hannah Callahan scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, and Emily Crouse scored in the fifth to tie the contest.

Despite outhitting the Trojans 8-6 on Thursday, Maiden would not score again in the game.

Sigmon pitched seven innings for Bandys, striking out six, and allowing three walks and eight hits.

Callahan led Maiden in her seven innings on the mound. She allowed one walk and six hits, while striking out nine Trojan batters.

North Iredell 7, St. Stephens 0

The Lady Raiders scored five runs early, including two in the first and three in the second, on their way to the victory against St. Stephens on Thursday.

Vonna Wood and Calyn Davis led the Lady Indians (5-5) with one hit each.

Katie Baker struck out five batter, while allowing 11 hits and no walks on the mound for St. Stephens.

Red Devils win third golf match

Led by medalist Lee Mitchell, Newton-Conover notched its third match victory of the season and first in conference play with an eight-stroke win over Maiden at Orchard Hills Country Club on Thursday.

The Red Devils tallied 154 strokes, finishing ahead of the Blue Devils, who totaled 162 strokes. Bunker Hill was third with 181 strokes, while Bandys tied for seventh with 225 strokes.

Mitchell shot a 35 to lead all competitors, while Maiden's Thomas Lilly was one stroke back in second and Mitchell's teammate, Alex Hefner, was two strokes back in third.

Fred T. Foard 6, Bandys 4

The Tigers earned a home victory on Thursday, handing the Trojans their second loss of the season on the diamond.

Foard (4-7) took a 2-0 lead behind a two-run home run from pitcher Carson Bryant, and added three more runs in the fourth inning to push its advantage.

Austin Kiser paced Bandys (6-2) with two RBIs on one hit, while Hunter Harvey had two hits.
