PREP NOTEBOOK: Indians pick up big win on court

After finishing 0-12 on the court a season ago, the St. Stephens tennis team picked up a hard-fought 5-4 victory against the Bunker Hill Bears on Tuesday in Claremont.

"This was a big win for the kids," said Lady Indians coach Todd Davis.

Hickory 4, Newton-Conover 0

Behind three second-half goals, the Red Tornadoes picked up a shutout road non-conference victory over the Red Devils.

Chris Decker led Hickory (1-0) with two goals, including one in the first and second halfs.

The Red Tornadoes scored three goals in a six-minute span in the second half, including netters by Decker, Connor Hartman and Frankie Wyatt.

Hickory tallied 10 shots on goal, while Newton-Conover (0-1) had six shots on target.

Fred T. Foard 1, Asheville 0

The Tigers improved to 2-0 on the season with their second win in as many days at the Freedom Invitational tournament.

Jordan Turner's lone goal off an assist from William Saenger was the difference maker in the contest.

Prep volleyball

South Caldwell 3, Bandys 2

The Trojans dropped their second contest in as many days, falling in five games to the home team Spartans, 23-25, 25-13, 25-14, 21-25 and 15-5.

South Caldwell was paced by an 11-kill, 16-dig night from Ashley Beck, while Kaley Binegar had 37 assists.

Maiden 3, Lincolnton 0

The Lady Blue Devils opened their season with a shutout road victory against the Lady Wolves.

Kenzie Garrison led Maiden (1-0) with 10 kills. Kalie Johnson added eight assists and Hannah Martin had seven assists.
