PREP NOTEBOOK: Hickory wins NWC golf match

Peter Harrill shot a 73, while teammates Frankie Wyatt and Austin Lackey fired a pair of 75 rounds to lead Hickory to a Northwestern golf match victory on Monday at Catawba Country Club.

The Red Tornadoes shot 302 as a six-person team, finishing three strokes ahead of Alexander Central.

The Cougars' Alex Rhyne earned medalist at the 18-hole match, shooting a 68, which was the only round carded in the 60s.

St. Stephens came in fourth place with a team score of 311, five strokes behind third-place Hibriten. The Indians were led by Austin Russell, who shot a 76.

Austin Peterson (77), Logan Barkley (79), Trey Burton (79), Dave Fussell (80) and Jake Toney (85) also comprised the Indians' squad.

Fred T. Foard finished in sixth place with a team score of 328. Sterling Cline led the Tigers with a 75, while Christian Carpenter shot a 78.

Playing with their third-string goal and without their starting center midfielder, the Lady Bears came up short of a non-conference victory Monday against the visiting Lady Rebels (5-1).

Alondra Cruz gave up the lone goal in the game.

The Lady Bears (1-8, 0-1) host Draughn on Tuesday in Catawba Valley 2A action.

Senior pitcher Taylor Sigmon allowed one run, as the Lady Trojans picked up the non-conference road victory against the Lady Spartans.
