The Maiden boys tennis team kicked off its season on the right foot Monday, defeating Lincolnton 6-2 on the hard court.
â€śI thought we played pretty well today,â€ť said Maiden coach Jon Huffman. â€śLincolnton was missing its No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 players. I wish they were at full strength so we could see how we matched up against them. I thought they played us well.â€ť
The Blue Devils host Wilkes Central on Wednesday, a team Huffman said will present a tough test.
â€śWednesday will be a lot tougher,â€ť Huffman said. â€śWilkes Central is a very tough team. I think they finished fifth last year and only lost one player. We scrimmaged against them last week and they got the best of us. It should be a great match. Iâ€™m looking forward to it.â€ť

The two-time defending state champion Newton-Conover boys tennis team lost a non-conference match Monday to Hickory.
The Red Devils (0-1) won two singles and one doubles match against the Red Tornadoes (1-0).

Lady Indians Classic: St. Stephens 9, Wilkes Central 1
Kalyn Meosky and Macy Franklin scored three goals each to lead the Lady Indians to the victory.
Franklin also assisted on two other goals by St. Stephens.Olivia Holmes, Kimberly Lopez and Alex Roarke also netted goals in the contest.
Wilkes Central's lone goal came from the foot of Tory Andreski.
The Lady Indians (1-0) meet Mooresville (1-0) tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Fred T. Foard 4, Statesville 1
The Lady Tigers (1-0) received a pair of goals from Caroline Durham on their way to a victory against the Lady Greyhounds.
Sandra Rumswinkel and Adele Jarrett also netted Foard goals, while Statesville's lone score came from Abby Register.

A three-run seventh inning pushed the Tigers (1-0) past the Golden Lions (0-1) on the road Monday.
Bunker Hill 4, North Lincoln 2
Seth Brotherton and Colton Chapman combined for a solid pitching effort on the mound for the Bears (1-0), while Oliver Reitzell delivered two hits, including a double and a triple.
St. Stephens 13, Maiden 0
Twelve of the Indians' 13 runs in the game came in the second and fourth innings.
