PREP NOTEBOOK: Bandys, N-C earn share of CVAC

Bandys and Newton-Conover both earned victories Friday in girls basketball, earning them both a share of the regular season Catawba Valley 2A basketball crown.

Behind 18 points from Brittany Moss, the Trojans (22-1, 13-1) picked up a dominant 75-15 win against Bunker Hill on Friday.

Jesse Story added 14 points in the victory, while Madi Story recorded seven points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Lady Red Devils (21-3, 13-1) topped West Caldwell (9-11, 7-7), 75-36, on the road.

Maiden 53, Draughn 50

The Lady Blue Devils earned their third victory in conference play, topping the Lady Wildcats.

Maiden finishes the regular season in seventh place at 9-14 overall and 3-11 in the Catawba Valley 2A, while Draughn is one spot ahead in sixth-place at 11-13, 4-10 in the CVAC.

Watauga 48, St. Stephens 31

The Lady Warriors improves to 7-15 overall and 5-7 in conference play with a Northwestern conference victory against the Lady Indians.

St. Stephens finishes the regular season 3-20 overall and 0-12 in the Northwestern 3A/4A.

Boys basketball

Draughn 58, Maiden 50

The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a victory against Maiden on Friday night.

Thomas Russell scored 19 points to lead Draughn (14-10, 9-5), while Adam Manns added 16 points and Prescott Pinnix tacked on 11 points.

Jalen Gibbs scored a game-high 20 points to lead Maiden (9-13, 5-9). Matt Johnson and Dustin Hipps added 10 points each for the Blue Devils.

West Caldwell 62, Newton-Conover 54

The Red Devils gave the Warriors a scare, but West Caldwell came out victorious to finish 13-1 in the Catawba Valley 2A.

Newton-Conover finishes the regular season 16-8 overall, 11-3 in the CVAC.

St. Stephens 68, Watauga 56

The Indians beat the Pioneers for the second time this season, picking up a road victory in Boone.

St. Stephens, who improves to 14-10 overall, completes the regular season in sole possession of third place in the NWC at 6-6, while Watauga finishes in fourth place at 5-7.

Bunker Hill 61, Bandys 36

Nathan Sherrill scored 14 points to lift the Bears to a 25-point victory against the Trojans in Claremont on Friday.

Taylor Simmons pitched in 11 points for Bunker Hill (6-17, 6-8), while J'len Wilson added 10 points.

Hayden Deal led Bandys (1-22, 0-14) with 10 points, while Travis McCorkle added eight points.
