Today is the first official day designated by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) for fall sports practices and tryouts.

Bandys and Maiden high schools are the first of the teams to officially kick off their 2013 campaign.

Both squads are the only two schools with practices in the morning at 9 a.m.

Newton-Conover will start its first practice at 3:30 p.m. and nearby Fred T. Foard practices at 5:30 p.m.

Bunker Hill, Hickory and St. Stephens all take to the field at 6 p.m.

All seven Catawba County teams will prepare for the next important date on Aug. 10, which is the first day high schools can compete in their first scrimmages.
