KERNERSVILLE — Maiden's Corbin Boyles added another title to his already impressive resumé on Saturday

The Blue Devil junior won the 2A cross-country state championship held at the Redmon Sports Complex.

"I'd have to say it takes the number one spot at this point," said Boyles of where his most recent state title ranks. "This is my first cross-country state title, and I wanted to win more than I had in any other race before."

Boyles, who finished fifth in both the 2011 and 2012 2A cross-country meets, also set a new personal record at this year's meet with a time of 15:54.86, finishing nearly 19 seconds ahead of second place Josh Rees-Jones, of the North Carolina School of Science.

Boyles' previous career-best time was 16:07 at this year's 2A West Regional meet at Freedom Park in Morganton.

He also improved his time from last year's 2A meet by 28 seconds.

"I opened up about 200 meters in, took control of the race and kept it," Boyles said of Saturday's performance. "Going out, I felt like it was going to be a lot closer and was really surprised when I crossed the line so far ahead."

Saturday's victory completed a comeback of sorts for Boyles, who competed through an IT band injury last season.

""I got to the line feeling relaxed and ready to go," said Boyles said of his emotions before Saturday's race. "I couldn't have felt any better."

Bauguess earns top-20 finish

KERNERSVILLE — In the 3A boys cross-country state meet, Fred T. Foard's Broderick Bauguess finished in 16th place with a time of 16:16.97.

Bauguess, a junior, finished in ninth place (16:10.93) in the event last season as a sophomore and in 20th place (16:55.70) as a freshman two seasons ago.
