PREP BASKETBALL: Classic brackets are released

HICKORY — The Hickory Metro Sports Commission has announced the pairings for the 27th annual Catawba Valley Classic high school basketball tournament

The event will be held Friday, Dec. 27-28 and 30, 2013. The tournament will feature the boy's and girl's teams from eight area high schools competing in the three day event.

On the boy's side of the bracket, Bunker Hill is the top seed. The Bears play defending Classic champion in eighth-seeded Hickory at 7:30 p.m. at Hickory High School, which serves as the site for the first two rounds of action in the boys tournament.

The second round of play on Saturday will also be held at Hickory High on Saturday, while the final round takes place on Monday at Catawba Valley Community College.

Other first round match ups include No. 2 St. Stephens vs. No. 7 South Caldwell, No. 3 Newton-Conover vs. No. 6 Maiden and No. 4 Alexander Central vs. No. 5 Fred T. Foard.

On the girl's side of competition, an undefeated Alexander Central team is the top seed in the girl's bracket and plays No. 8 Fred T. Foard at 7 p.m. at Catawba Valley Community College, which serves as the site for the women's first two rounds.

Other opening round match ups in the girl's division include defending Classic champion in second-seeded Hickory against seventh-seeded Newton-Conover, No. 3 South Caldwell versus No. 6 Bunker Hill and No. 4 St. Stephens versus No. 5 Maiden.

The second round of play will be held at CVCC on Friday with the final round on Sunday also at CVCC.

The Catawba Valley Classic has been well known throughout the region as the premiere holiday high school event over the past 26 years.

The Hickory Metro Sports Commission serves as the host organization for the event and distributes the gate receipts among the participating schools.

Following the 2012 event each high school playing in the event received a donation of more than $2,700.

Conference passes are not accepted for this event, which includes Northwestern 3A/4A and Southern District 7 conference passes.
