The Newton American Legion Post is sending local high school students to a state government program.

American Legion Post 16 is sending nine students from Catawba County to the 2014 Tar Heel Boys State. The Legion has sponsored the event for more than 70 years.

Boys State is a program that teaches students in North Carolina about government and how the state operates.

“The boys will learn how state government is run,” said Ron Harris, commander of Post 16. “During the six day period, the boys will run their own state government as well.”

The program began this past Sunday and will run all the way up to graduation on Saturday. This year’s program will take place at Catawba College in Salisbury.
