Police arrested two Newton residents who were hiding powder cocaine in a infant’s bedroom.
Authorities seized 186 grams of powder cocaine and $9,000 in cash from 911 S. Brady Ave. in Newton on Wednesday afternoon after Newton Police Department, the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and Hickory Police Department served a search warrant at the residence.
Newton Police Chief Don Brown said the suspects were hiding the cocaine inside an infant’s bedroom.
“I think they probably do that because they think it’s not as likely of a place where people would hide drugs,” Brown said. “It’s a place that people wouldn’t think to look.”
The residence was a two-bedroom apartment, and the cocaine was discovered in the room with a crib in it and things you would associate with an infant. He added that the baby is now in the custody of a family member. Â
Police arrested Alma Leticia Avalos Martinez and Jonathan Andres Mazo Lopez and charged them with trafficking cocaine. They are being held at the Catawba County Detention Facility on $100,000 secured bonds each.
The street value of the drugs is anywhere from $5,940 to $18,600 depending on packaging and time of sale, Brown said.
“The cooperation with the sheriff’s department and Hickory Police Department is a benefit to all of us, and is greatly appreciated,” Brown added.
