Patrol troop welcomes new captain

May 10, 2012

Dedric Robinson says he envisioned a career with the FBI or Secret Service after graduating from college.

A federal government hiring freeze in the early 1990s sent Robinson searching for a different path. At the suggestion of a mentor, he pursued a career with N.C. Highway Patrol.

Now, 20 years later, he's the captain of the state patrol's Newton-based Troop F — which includes Catawba and nine other counties, 166 uniformed troopers and 40 civilian employees.

Robinson took the post April 23, following more than two and a half years as lieutenant in Salisbury-based patrol Troop E.
