The Highway Patrol announces a preliminary number of 13 motorists who died on North Carolina highways during the Memorial Day weekend.  The holiday weekend officially began at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 24, and ended at midnight, Monday, May 27.  Last year the Highway Patrol investigated five fatal collisions and 360 injury related collisions during the holiday period.

The Memorial Day holiday is set aside to honor deceased men and women from the Armed Forces, as well as officially kicking off the beginning of summer vacation season in North Carolina.
