The Carolina Panthers reduced their roster to the NFL mandatory 53 players by 4 p.m. on Saturday.

A total of 21 players were either waived or released on Saturday by the Panthers. Among the notable releases were safety Robert Lester, guard Chris Scott and wide receiver Tavarres King.

An undrafted rookie in 2013, Lester started four games for the Panthers last season at strong safety and also played in 12 total contest.

Playing in 10 games with eight starts last season, Scott injured his knee in Week 9 and missed the rest of the season due to the injury.

King, who spent part of his rookie year last season with the Denver Broncos before being claimed off waiver by Carolina, was battling several players for a wideout spot with the team, including Jericho Cotchery, Jason Avant, Brenton Bersin and Philly Brown — all of which made the squad.

Quarterback Joe Webb was one of those players that survived the cuts, leaving three quarterbacks on the Panthers roster. Cam Newton (left ankle surgery, rib fracture) and Derek Anderson (right hand) are dealing with separate injury issues, prompting Webb to remain on the team.

Several undrafted rookies were released by Carolina on Saturday, including running back Darrin Reaves, linebacker Denicos Allen, cornerback Carrington Byndom, linebacker Adarius Glanton and wide receiver Marcus Lucas.

Other players waived by the Panthers on Saturday include guard Derek Dennis, cornerbacks James Dockery and Josh Thomas, offensive tackles Andrew McDonald and Kevin Hughes, safeties Tom Nelson and Anderson Russell, defensive tackles Drake Nevis, Micanor Regis and Casey Walker, linebacker D.J. Smith, fullback Michael Zordich and tight end Mike McNeil.

The Panthers will have to make another adjustment to their roster when defensive end Frank Alexander returns in Week 5 of the NFL season. Alexander was suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL policy and program for substances of abuse.

Due to his suspension, Alexander does not count towards the Panthers' roster limit of 53 players.
