The Carolina Panthers further solidified their defensive line on Friday night with the selection of Purdue defensive tackle Kawann Short.

The second-round pick for Carolina was its only of the second day of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman regarded Short as the best pass rushing defensive tackle in this year's draft.

"Kawann is a legitimate three-down defensive tackle," Gettleman said. "He plays the run well. He can play both techniques for us. He is the most natural pass rusher of all the defensive tackles in the draft. He was at the top of our board."

Short finished his Boilermaker career with 19.5 sacks, 49 tackles for a loss and 186 total tackles (124 solo).

"Short can pretty much play any of the positions," said Panthers coach Ron Rivera. "... He is an athletic body."

The Panthers used Thursday's first round pick (14th overall) on Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei.

"We feel good about this pick," Gettleman said. "It gives us a tremendous defensive line rotation."

Rounds two and three of the NFL Draft took place on Friday. The rest of the draft wraps up Saturday with rounds 4-7.
