Officials inspect U.S. 70 sinkhole

May 19, 2011

A sinkhole opened on U.S. 70 SE in Hickory, and motorists should avoid the area if possible.

The sinkhole is on private and public property in the westbound lanes on U.S. 70 SE in front of Valley Hills Mall. Detours have been set up in the area, and if possible, motorists should avoid this area.

Hickory Police Department and Hickory Public Service crews are on the scene, and North Carolina Department of Transportation officials are on the way to assess the situation.

First, thank goodness a Piedmont Wagon Bus wasn't going westbound in that lane or one person might have been injured.

Second, City of Hickory can assist state DOT workers by lending them the ego of their mayor to fill the void.

Third, Maybe a few more of these things will randomly sprout open and swallow a few of the "rice burner cars" with their annoying mufflers and clever never finished paint schemes. You know the ones street racing up and down US70 that Hickory PD could care less about. Odd how they need $40,000 in new toys to go along with their "leaning tower of policing" to have a chance at cracking down on the kids when other agencies can do it with existing technology.
