N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will begin overnight closures of Interstate 40 East in Catawba County on Monday for construction work.
Workers will begin a concrete pavement grooving project in the closed section from exits 130-133 through Conover.
The closure will begin at 9 p.m. each night and last through 6 a.m. the next morning. In a press release, NCDOT did not include information about the length of the project or closures.
Once the eastbound section is completed, crews will do the same work on I-40 West in the same area. Each section is expected to take three days to complete, weather permitting.
The work will include grinding the old concrete down to a smooth surface prior to resurfacing. The pavement grooving will help improve wet-weather driving by reducing the potential for hydroplaning.
For real-time travel information at any time, call 511 or check the electronic message boards along I-40. Drivers also can visit www.ncdot.gov/travel or follow NCDOT on Twitter at www.ncdot.gov/travel/twitter.
Traffic will take a signed detour during I-40 closures. The detour will take drivers off exit 130 to U.S. 70 East and back on I-40 at exit 133.
When the westbound grinding begins, the same detour will be set in the opposite direction.
