A Newton business owner received a national health award from the Office of the President.

Sharon Rashidi, owner of The Perfect Workout in Newton, was one of 47 individuals and health groups selected nationwide for the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition’s Community Leadership Award.

The award recognizes a handful of individuals across the nation each year who make sports, physical activity, fitness and nutrition-related programs available in their communities.

“It was a real surprise,” Rashidi said after learning of her win. “I’m surprised I was nominated. Just to hear I was nominated was overwhelming. When I learned I had won, I was shocked.”
