Newton prepares to install new mayor

December 13, 2011

Newton City Council will install Anne P. Stedman as the city's first female mayor tonight. It will also appoint a citizen to fill her unexpired council seat to conclude the 7 p.m. meeting at city hall.

Stedman replaces outgoing Mayor Robert Mullinax, and leaves behind two years in her council term. She has served as the city's mayor pro tem since her re-election in 2009. City Council will also elect a new mayor pro tem tonight.

In other business slated for tonight, Newton City Council will hold a public hearing and consider financing bids for up to almost $5.7 million in borrowing. Funding will go toward the equipment and projects included in the city's capital improvement plan.
