Newton Police Department is helping out senior citizens and the community be aware of scamming, identity theft and fraud. The name of the program is Identity Theft, Fraud and Scams and is overseen by Officer Jeff Longstreet.

“Be careful and cautious at all times with your belongings,” Longstreet said. “These presentations are supposed to be tools of the trade to keep the community aware and informed of different crimes arising.”

The program runs throughout the rest of the summer where Officer Longstreet will talk to the community or senior citizens at different facilities and area churches.

“Chief Brown brought it up at a departmental meeting about getting the community aware of these different crimes,” Longstreet said. “I approached him and told him that I could do some crime-prevention seminars over the summer geared to not just our senior citizens but our overall community. In Newton alone we have taken care of around 100 instances with frauds, scams or identity theft.”
