Newton man killed in motorcycle wreck

August 24, 2011

For the past ten years, Nelson Clark’s life has revolved around Harley Davidson.

He loved to ride, but not just for himself. Every year, Clark rode in charity events and fundraisers, including an annual even for kids at Conover School.

“He did the Christmas toy run every winter and was always involved in charities,” said Ginger Mitchell, Clark’s sister.

On Tuesday, Clark was killed in a traffic accident doing the thing he loved most – riding his Harley.

Clark, of Newton, was killed after his motorcycle hit a car that failed to stop for a red light.

Hickory police say Clark was driving his 2007 Harley Davidson Electra Glide east on U.S. 70 in Hickory at about 6:41 p.m. Tuesday when he approached the intersection of Fairgrove Church Road. Gaye Ikard, 50, was driving a 1990 Ford 1500 pick-up truck north on Fairgrove Church Road and attempting to cross the intersection.

When Ikard failed to stop for a red light at the intersection with U.S. 70, Clark collided with the pick-up truck and was ejected from his motorcycle, according to police. Lucille Pitts, 85, of Conover, was driving behind Clark and continued to run into the ejected man.

Clark was killed in the accident.

Authorities said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, and Hickory Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the incident.

In addition to riding his Harley, Mitchell said her brother worked on computers a lot. She said Clark lived with his parents and enjoyed taking care of them.

“He never met a stranger,” Mitchell said, “and he was a real friendly person.”
