Newton lights up for Christmas season

November 27, 2011

Newton lit up its downtown Sunday night as hundreds celebrated the beginning of the Christmas season.

The city’s “Light Up The Town” drew a crowd to the courthouse square for music, singing and homemade treats.

Children lined up around the square for free pictures with Santa Claus and $3 rides on a camel named Bubba.

Anne Stedman, Newton’s mayor elect, welcomed the crowd to the holiday celebration.

“I guess Mother Nature saw it fit for us to do this,” Stedman said, referring to a forecast for rain showers Sunday evening. “Unfortunately, the only snowflakes you’ll see are around my neck.”

Newton’s festival and events committee organized the event, which also included hay rides and other activities for all ages.
