Newton handles two tough issues

Tuesday night the  Newton City Council agreed to change its zoning ordinance text amendment to allow indoor shooting range, gun and ammunition sales and ammunition manufacturing and assembly within the city’s general manufacturing district.

A public hearing was held to hear public comments on the topic and only the owner of the business that spurred the zoning change spoke.
 
Council Members Tom Rowe and Mary Bess Lawing voted against the measure, saying they thought the amendment should specify firing ranges be a certain distance from schools.
