Newton event ‘Spooktacular’

Newton’s ghouls and goblins will flock to the 1924 Courthouse square this weekend for an event that is sure to be "Spooktacular."

Area groups will host the fourth annual Spooktacular event in downtown Newton on Saturday for children, parents and families looking to have a fun and safe Halloween.

This year’s activities will revolve around Newton’s downtown square from 5-8 p.m. Saturday. In addition to games, prizes and trick-or-treating, this year’s Spooktacular will feature a costume contest.

The contest, sponsored by Newton Parks and Recreation, is open to everyone and includes homemade and commercial categories.

“It’s a lot of fun for the kids and a lot of fun for all ages,” said Marcie Winkler, administrative assistant at the recreation center. “Sometimes people don’t have somewhere to go, and it’s all fun activities for someone looking for something to do.”

The “Halloween Costume Contest” will begin at 6:30 p.m. The contest will have one winner in each of the following age groups: 0-3, 4-7, 8-12, 13-17 and 18 and older. Entries will be accepted until 6 p.m. Saturday. Each participant will receive a goody bag, according to the city of Newton.

Spooktacular will also have safe trick-or-treating for children.

Honey’s IGA, which is one of the main sponsors for the event, donates candy for a trunk-or-treat, where children in costumes go from car to car and pick up candy. Last year, more than 1,500 pounds of candy was distributed.

Wes Weaver, president of the Newton Merchants Group, said the Spooktacular always draws a lot of children from area neighborhoods.

“It’s a lot of fun and there are a lot of games to play,” Weaver said.

“It’s safe and right downtown. All the roads are blocked off, and you don’t have to worry where your candy is coming from.”

In addition, fall scene costume photos will be taken again this year, and the photos will be available for free download on Newton’s Flickr page.

This year’s Spooktacular is sponsored by Honey’s IGA Supermarkets of Newton and Vale. The event is hosted by the Newton Merchants Group, the Newton Festival & Events Committee, and the Newton Parks & Recreation Department.
