New publisher comes to O-N-E

November 6, 2012

For the first time in its 133-year history as Catawba County’s oldest operating newspaper, the Observer-News-Enterprise has a woman publisher. Texas native and veteran newspaper and magazine executive Nanci Batson has come to Newton from Rhode Island to take the reins of the paper.

Batson has assumed her new post at the county seat city’s newspaper—an amalgamation of the 1879 Newton Enterprise, the 1880s Catawba County News and the 1933 Newton Observer. Announcement of her appointment was made by Terri Leifeste of Benton, AR, another female journalist executive with Horizon Publications, based in Marion, IL, the corporate owner of the local paper.

Leifeste, a vice president of Horizon and group publisher for the O-N-E, stated that Batson has come here from her former post as publisher of six community newspapers—similar to the O-N-E—in southern Rhode Island. Horizon operates newspapers and magazines in communities throughout the United States, with emphasis on community papers.
