Newton-Conover continued its great play on the volleyball court Tuesday against Bunker Hill.
The Lady Red Devils (6-1, 3-0) won their third-straight conference match, knocking off the Lady Bears in three games at home, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20.
“They swung at us,” said N-C coach Linda Richards. “Bunker Hill was aggressive and played hard.”
Corbin Evans led the way for Newton-Conover with nine kills and seven aces.
Evans explained why her team has been successful.
“We just communicate a lot,” Evans said. “Obviously, if you don’t communicate, you aren’t going to be good at this game. We just have a lot of communication between each other.”
After N-C’s Sarah Van Horn served two straight aces to open the first game of the match, Evans teamed with setter Mary Hinson for four early kills. Hinson had five assists in the first game.
“This is my first year setting.,” Hinson said. “Corbin works with whatever I put up. She doesn’t complain about anything. She just makes it work.”
The quick start enabled to the Red Devils to pull away and stay ahead, winning the game.
Bunker Hill played much more aggressive in the second game. The two teams played extremely close on the scoreboard throughout the game.
Despite leading 19-10, the Lady Bears (2-8, 1-3) clawed back into the game, but lost some crucial late points, giving Newton-Conover a 2-0 lead in the match.
Many new faces saw playing time in the third game for Newton-Conover.
This new line-up produced some mistakes, enabling Bunker Hill to take an early 9-2 lead. Included in the run were three aces by Logan Drum.
“We just need to take care of the ball, no matter who is in the game,” Richards said. “We tried some different things. Fundamentals are the key to the game. Every player has them. They just have to use them.”
It took the new group a while to mesh, but before the game was over, Newton-Conover was back within contention.
Evans once again stepped up big for her team. With the Lady Red Devils trailing 20-17, Newton-Conover scored four straight, including three aces by Evans, to take a 21-20 lead.
“Everyone knows what they have to do fundamental-wise,” Evans said. “Once we get the job that we need done, everybody works together and we can still win and pull it out.”
The late surge propelled the Lady Red Devils to a 25-20 game win and three-game sweep.
Both teams are in action tomorrow. N-C travels to Draughn, while Bunker Hill travels to West Caldwell.View more articles in:
