N-C soccer gets first win

The Newton-Conover Red Devils earned their first soccer win of the season Wednesday. The Red Devils won 1-0 at Maiden. Chandler Johnson scored the match's lone goal in the 26th minute, and Eli Cordes earned the assist.

Newton-Conover is 1-0 against the Catawba Valley 2A and 1-7 overall. Maiden dropped to 1-5 overall on 0-1 in conference play.

BUNKER HILL 4, EAST BURKE 3
Terry Aviles led the Bears in a conference win Wednesday at home against the Cavaliers. Aviles scored one of the Bears’ four goals and assisted on two more.

Jesus Rodruiguez scored two goals for Bunker Hill, Miguel Ramirez scored one and assisted on one, and Erlan Floriano had one assist.

DRAUGHN 2, BANDYS 0
The Trojans opened conference play Wednesday with a two-goal loss to the Wildcats. The Trojans are 0-1 against the Catawba Valley 2A.

Ni Xiong scored the Wildcats’ first goal in the 47th minute, and Sa Thao added an insurance goal in the 78th minute on a penalty kick.

Michael Purcell was the winning goal keeper Wednesday.

FRED T. FOARD 2, STATESVILLE 1
The Tigers scored two second-half goals for a come-from-behind win Wednesday at Statesville.

Foard's Brody Ruffner tied the game at 1 on a direct kick, and Luke Shely gave the Tigers the lead off an assist from Jason Smith.

COLLEGE SOCCER
NORTH GEORGIA 2, LENOIR-RHYNE 1
North Georgia (2-0-1) handed Lenoir-Rhyne (1-1) its first loss with a 2-1 win Wednesday at North Georgia.

The Saints scored twice in the first half in a two-minute span and held on for the win.  

North Georgia’s Chris Griffith scored in the 30th minute with a goal from the top of the box off a pass from Jesy Phelps.

The Saints made it 2-0 1 minute 53 seconds later when Juan Hurtado shot one past L-R goalkeeper Tom Heath.

Dave Bailey scored L-R’s lone goal in the 87th minute.
