Newton-Conover and Fred T. Foard advanced to Thursday’s third round of the NCHSAA playoffs.

Two other Catawba County schools — Bandys and St. Stephens — weren’t as fortunate. Both squads had their seasons ended.

The Tigers (30-1) had to overcome a 27-3 deficit early on to win and advance.

Newton-Conover (40-2) took out Ashe County in the first round and followed that up with a 42-18 win against Chase.

The Trojans lost a close contest with Thomasville (27-11), ending Bandys’ season with a 17-12 record.

The Indians also fell in round one, losing to North Iredell. St. Stephens finishes 2012 at 26-7.
