N-C Dominates WC in Round 1

The Newton-Conover Red Devils started their title defense as Catawba Valley 2-A conference tournament champions in convincing fashion. The Red Devils swept the West Caldwell Warriors 3-0 at Newton-Conover and earned their 15th win this season against a conference opponent.

The Red Devils defeated the Warriors 25-9, 25-12, 25-8. Newton-Conover rested key players Isabella Zaliagiris and Paris Wicklin on Thursday against West Caldwell, and Corbin Evans and head coach Linda Richards were not at the match.

Newton-Conover assistant coach Bob Harrison said the game Thursday was a good chance for more players to get game experience.

“From now on out, we have got a grind of playing every other day, and we were conserving our players,” Harrison said. “We have got to mentally tough to play like that.”

McKenzi Davis led the Red Devils on Thursday with six kills, an ace and a block. Morgan Berry had seven aces and three kills, and Sarah Van Horn contributed four aces and three kills. Samiya Pitts had four kills and a block in the win.

The Warriors had only four team kills and one ace in the match. Kandy Adams had two kills, and Miranda Frost and Adasha Pearson had one each.
Newton-Conover plays East Burke on Monday in the second round of the CVAC tournament. The Cavaliers defeated Draughn 3-0 on Thursday at East Burke.

The Red Devils’ win came one night after Newton-Conover beat North Iredell, which had only lost one game all season, 3-2.. The Red Devils won the first two games Wednesday, but North Iredell rallied and won the next two. Newton-Conover won the final game 15-8 for the win.

MAIDEN 3, BUNKER HILL 0
The third-seeded Blue Devils swept the Bears in the opening round of the CVAC tournament. Maiden defeated Bunker Hill 3-0 at Maiden and won the sets 25-9, 25-16, 25-14.

Lauren Sizemore led the Blue Devils with 11 kills, and Melanie Annas and McKenzie Garrison had 10 apiece.

Ibtxhis Khang had 40 assists in the win, and Go Lo contributed 40 digs.
Maiden plays Monday against the winner of the South Iredell-Bandys match, which was postponed.
