N-C advances to face East Burke
The Lady Red Devils advanced to the Sectional Round of the playoffs with a victory over Mountain Heritage on the road Wednesday.
Leading Newton-Conover (23-3) were four players – Kadesha Gibbs, Quazzy Tipps, Shynese Whitener and Tiana Littlejohn.
They combined to score 48 of their team’s 59 points in the game.
The Lady Red Devils rushed out to a 28-13 halftime lead with a combination of their strong defense and fast break offense.
“I was very pleased in the first half with our communication on defense,” said N-C coach Jonathan Tharpe. “We locked them down in the first quarter. We missed some easy lay ups in transition, but we continued to push the ball.”
Mountain Heritage (19-8) implementing a zone defense in the second half. However, the Lady Red Devils continued to capitalize on offense.
They played strong defensively by not allowing any Mountain Heritage player to reach double figure scoring.
“When Mountain Heritage went into a zone defense, that gave us an opportunity to work on our zone offense,” Tharpe said. “We did some really good things off of that. We are headed into Friday really prepared and playing some good basketball.”
Awaiting the Lady Red Devils (23-3) on Friday will be Catawba Valley Athletic Conference foe East Burke. The Lady Cavaliers (20-8) defeated Brevard on the road, 61-48.
Tharpe feels his team has the edge with home court advantage.
“They know us and we know them,” Tharpe said. “There won’t be any surprises. I think it is going to come down to the little things. One thing we are really happy about is that we get to play for a Sectional Championship on our home floor. We are excited for that opportunity.”
