Newton-Conover inducted three members into its athletic Hall of Fame less than a year ago, and now the school wants more. The high school is now accepting nominations for the Newton-Conover Hall of Fameâs 2011 class.
âWe do this once a year, and we got it to where people can start nominating who they want,â said Shawn Sigmon, chairwoman of the Newton-Conover Hall of Fame. âThe basic concept is recognizing those people who gave back to Newton-Conover through the athletic program. Weâre hoping older people remember people in the â50s and â60s and will send in a form.â
Nomination forms are available for download on websites for the Hall of Fame and high school. The committee will accept nominations for past coaches and athletes as well as longtime supporters of Red Devils athletics throughout the community.
The deadline for nominations is Dec. 31.
After the six-member committee receives the nominations, it will go through the applications to decide the three people elected to the hall.
âGetting into the hall depends on how much work the nominators put into the form,â Sigmon said. âBasically, they have to sell it to us.â
Sigmon is the leader of the committee, and it also includes athletic director Ericia Turner, the booster club president or somebody they designate as their representative, a past or present Newton-Conover coach, and two at-large members.
The committee and school will recognize the inductees at the winter sports banquet, typically held in March. Nominees not inducted will be kept and up for nomination the following year.
The committee earlier this year elected Tisha England and the late Nate McCorkle, the Red Devilsâ only All-America athletes, and longtime football coach athletic director Don Patrick for the inaugural class.
âWe hope it goes on for years and years,â Sigmon said.
