Newton-Conover senior running back Jervasse Moss was tabbed Friday to play in the 64th annual North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star football game.

Moss will play for the West as one of 32 high school football players on the squad.

“I think this is a good opportunity to get ready and prepared for college,” Moss said. “It’s very special because I didn’t get to play many games this season. God just blessed me with another game to play in high school football against the best players. We’ll see what happens when I get down there.”

Despite injuries to his ankles, shoulder and hand, the 5-foot-6, 150-pound running back rushed for 973 yards and eight scores in 2011, and accounted for 115 receiving yards.

Moss is the 13th Newton-Conover football player selected to the game, and the sixth under coach Nick Bazzle. The Red Devils have been represented in the game in five of the last seven years.

In 2011, behind Moss and nine other seniors, the Red Devils made their seventh straight trip to the playoffs.

Moss plans to attend Carson-Newman in the fall, play football and potentially run track.

He is focused on his high school career finale.

“I just thank God that I’m healthy now and that I’m going to play one more game,” he said.
