Merchants hope sale attracts crowd to city

May 30, 2012

Local merchants plan to take advantage of recent city code changes during a downtown sidewalk sale this weekend in Newton.

Organizers say they believe more than 30 local businesses will participate in the inaugural Downtown Newton Merchants Sidewalk Sale scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

The sales will vary in time and discount based on individual merchants, said Jessica Setzer, a technician at Walkers Pharmacy, which organized the event in memory of longtime Newton pharmacist and businessman Paul Walker.

“I thought it would be a good idea for Walkers, but I didn’t want to be on the sidewalk by myself selling toys,” Setzer said. “So I started going business to business, and I thought, ‘It would be rude to ask some people, and not ask everyone.'”
