A Newton man is in jail after attacking his friend with a flashlight.
Catawba County sheriffâ€™s deputies arrested Derek Jerome Cox, 31, of 2350 Coley Fish Pond Road in Newton, on Wednesday after he attacked his friend to steal money.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the residence of 4660 Bear Cove Road in Catawba, said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.
Reid said Cox attacked the male victim while he was putting a large sum of money into a safe. He said Cox first hit the victim with a collapsible baton and then a flash light after that.
The victim was hospitalized with mild injuries, Reid said.
Cox stole the money from the residence and was later arrested by sheriffâ€™s deputies at his home.
He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and is being held in the Catawba County Jail on a $30,000 secured bond.
He scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Michael Neal Bagwell, 36, of 495 Rosehill Drive in McDonough, Ga.; aggravated assault, aggravated assault of an officer, all traffic (except DWI); $75,000 secured bond.
Other recent incidents
* Burglary and larceny at Gregory Wood Products on 2600 Woodtech Drive in Newton. Stolen included a $100 side grinder, three chainsaws valued at more than $1,000, drill bits and storage area.
* Larceny of a $400 catalytic converter belonging to Joe Harold Abernathy, 65, of 3570 N.C. 127 South in Hickory.
* Burglary and larceny at 2644 Robinson Road in Newton. Stolen included a $100 gold panda ring and a $350 heart-shaped sterling silver charm.
* Burglary and larceny of a $1,500 generator at 3419 6th St. Drive NW in Hickory.
