Lincolnton — A Newton man was arrested in connection with a 2010 shooting incident outside a Denver bar.

Chad Eugene Moten, 34, of Newton, was arrested by Lincoln County sheriff's detectives and charged with attempted murder, after police got "a break in the case" on June 18.

On Jan. 1, 2010, Jeremiah Seth Hoyle got into an altercation with the suspect inside the Neat Martini Bar at 751 N. N.C. 16, according to Lincoln County detective Kelly Paris.

As Hoyle and his girlfriend were being picked up by Hoyle’s mother, the suspect allegedly pulled a gun from his gold Mercedes, fired two shots in the air, then opened the passenger side door to the Hoyle’s vehicle and fired three shots into the car, Paris continued.

Hoyle was struck three times in the legs, and his mother was hit two times in the legs by debris from the bullets, Paris said.

At the time no one could identify the suspect. On June 18, officers responded to a call at Safari Miles in Denver. During the call, the bartender at Safari Miles pointed out the suspect sitting at a table as the person involved in the shooting incident at Neat Martini. He told officers he was the bartender at Neat Martini when the incident occurred.
Officers questioned the man and his wife about the shooting incident and got their personal information.

They stated they owned a gold Mercedes, but sold it about a year ago. Several days after the interview, detectives located the suspect vehicle in the driveway of the home.

During a photo line-up, Hoyle and the bartender were able to give detectives a positive identification on Moten. A 9mm handgun found in the vehicle was seized as evidence in the case.

Moten was taken before a Lincoln County Magistrate and placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.
