Maiden woman dies in Florida crash

October 21, 2010

A Maiden woman died in a three-car collision Wednesday in Florida while she screamed for help along a roadway.
Tammy Chester, 39, and her husband, Jeremy Chester, 28, both of Maiden, stopped their vehicle Wednesday about 8 p.m. on State Road 528 in the outside, eastbound lane in Cape Canaveral, Fla.
Jeremy Chester was driving the couple's 1993 Toyota, and Tammy Chester was sitting in the passenger seat when the vehicle stopped on the road.
Tammy Chester got out the car less than one minute after the car stopped and started screaming for help. She said her husband was having a seizure and needed medical assistance, according to Sgt. Kim Montes with the Florida Highway Patrol.
As Tammy Chester called for help, she was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet driven by Kory Pyles, 22, of Titusville, Fla. The Chevrolet also struck the couple's Toyota. According to a press release, Pyles was traveling eastbound and was unsuccessful in avoiding Tammy Chester in the roadway.
Another vehicle, a 2006 Saturn driven by Michael Culleny, 26, of Cocoa, Fla., came by seconds later and struck the Chesters' Toyota again.
Montes said State Road 528 is a four-lane road with two lanes each for eastbound and westbound traffic. A median divides the lanes, and the road's speed limit is 65 mph.
There are no streetlights in the area where the incident occurred, and because the crash happened at night, visibility was limited, Montes said. The Toyota's lights were on at the time of the crash.
Montes said it's possible Pyles and Culleny didn't realize the Toyota was stopped completely or saw the vehicle and didn't have enough time to avoid the collision.
Pyles and Culleny were wearing seat belts at the time of the collisions and were not seriously injured. Alcohol was not a factor for Pyles and Culleny in the crash, according to the press release. No other passengers were in the vehicles.
Montes said state troopers are recreating the accident to determine the speed the Chevrolet and Saturn were traveling when they struck Tammy Chester and the Toyota.
Tammy Chester was transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Jeremy Chester, who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, was transported to Holmes Regional Hospital in Melbourne, Fla., with minor injuries. Montes said doctors retrieved a blood sample from Jeremy Chester to determine if alcohol was involved in the crash.
The Chesters' Toyota was totaled in the incident. The Chevrolet and the Saturn received significant damage.
Charges are pending in the incident. Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, which could take 60 days, Montes said.
Montes said Tammy and Jeremy Chester were visiting Tammy's sister, who lives in Florida.
