Maiden studies Internet sweepstakes

July 17, 2012

As debate over fees and rules of Internet sweepstakes businesses continues throughout Catawba County, leaders in Maiden are taking a step back and trying to get a better understanding of the situation.

"We are trying to get everything well in order before we have to go back and redo everything," said Maiden Mayor Bob Smyre. "We are wanting to make sure we get it right. We have been talking about it a long time and there seems to be new questions popping up."

Before Maiden Town Council takes another official vote on the Internet sweepstakes parlors that are appearing almost countywide, Smyre said town leaders want to get as much information as possible. As they mull the the topic, they'll also begin thinking about joining other Catawba County communities that are creating new fees for the businesses.
