Maiden resident and angler Hank Cherry is the Bassmaster Elite Series Rookie of the Year.

“Rookie of the year is a great foundation for my career,” Cherry said. “The guys in this rookie class are all great anglers, and it was a real accomplishment to come out on top. I’m going to build from here and someday get an Angler of the Year title.”

Cherry has three top-10 finishes on the Bassmaster Elite Series this season, including at Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in February and at Logan Martin Lake and West Point Lake in May.

By virtue of his Rookie of the Year win, Cherry qualifies for the 2014 Bassmaster Classic — the second of his career.

“This year was the road to redemption,” Cherry said. “I will have my shot at the title again.”
