The Maiden football program officially finished its preseason on Friday with a tough test against an out-of-area team.
The Blue Devils hosted Charlotte Olympic in both junior varsity and varsity action.
It was the first scrimmage for the Blue Devils since last Saturday’s Lincoln County Jamboree.
“This is a good football team in Olympic,” said Maiden second-year head coach Frank Snider. “I wanted them to come in here. We got a quick dose of reality with their speed and size. Two of their players have already signed with the University of North Carolina. Their nose guard is an exceptionally good player. We had trouble blocking him all night. It was good for us to see that kind of speed.”
The game was a reunion of sorts for former Maiden assistant football coach Barry Shuford, who is now the head coach of the Olympic Trojans.
“I’ve known (Shuford) for a long time,” said Snider, who had Shuford on his staff as an assistant baseball coach at Maiden. “We are good friends. We talked to him about a 7-on-7. That didn’t work out so we scrimmaged. He wanted to bring his team up here. It was good.”
Snider saw positives in Friday’s scrimmage, but also areas that his team needs improvement on.
“At times we did some bad things, but at times I thought we moved the ball reasonably well,” he said. “We didn’t play special teams or anything like that, which makes a difference. Overall, I wasn’t pleased with the scrimmage. I thought we needed to get a little tougher up front and on defense. I didn’t think we tackled well. We need to tackle better. Those are some things we can work on, though.”
Following Friday’s preseason finale, Maiden starts preparation for the first of its 11 opponents in 2013 — Fred T. Foard.
The Blue Devils travel take on the Tigers on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
“This whole part of the season is over,” Snider said of his squad’s preseason. “Monday, we start our regular season practice and get ready for Foard. We put all of this behind us and the summer behind us. What we’ve done before doesn’t really matter now. Now, we’ll start game planning for Foard and getting ready for that. I don’t know much about Foard. I know they have a new coach in coach (Tom) Harper and a new quarterback. It’s hard to really make an observations about them."View more articles in:
